Louis-Philippe (1773-1850) Known as the duc d’Orleans before his accession, King Louis-Philippe became the leader of France after the Abdication of Charles X. Although he was a constitutional monarch, King Louis-Philippe gained personal power by splitting the liberal movement and appointing weak ministers. When the government prohibited a banquet organized by supporters of political reform, the Republicans of Paris revolted. This led to the Revolution of 1848. The king abdicated on February 24, 1848 and shortly after, fled to England.

1830 – Louis-Philippe becomes king of France.

1832 – Reform Act in Britain extends voting to middle class.

1834 – Lafayette dies.

1835 – Ferdinand I becomes Emperor of Austria.

1847 – Louis Napoleon I Bonaparte imprisoned for conspiracy.

1848 – Louis-Philippe abdicates on February 24.
