Description
Peace Dollars came about after World War I because many coin collectors, also known as numismatists, were keen on having a new Silver Dollar design that reflected the newly acquired peace. A contest to design the Silver Dollar was opened to sculptors as a way to save the U.S. Mint from having to spend any money on redesigning the new Silver coin. Like previous Silver coin designs, the requirements for the contest included depicting Lady Liberty on the obverse, and an eagle on the reverse. Anthony de Francisci’s design for the Silver coins was chosen, and the first Peace Dollar was struck on December 28, 1921.
